FIFTH GRADE . . . Showing respect in art

Respect in the art room means not only being kind to each other, but being kind and considerate about what we each create. Our artwork is out there for everyone to see. We want to feel proud of what we worked on and we always want to encourage our friends to feel creative.

Here is a video about sharing our sketchpad drawings and showing respect. In this video, we are sharing our emoji sketches.

Enjoy!

FIFTH GRADE Hearts

We HEART art! This is our collaborative art project that all artists in the Lower School are taking part in. Our squares and heart designs will come together as a large mural later this fall. From the sweetest Beginner designs to the amazing and intricate patterns of a 5th grade artist, Ranney School has heart!

5th Grade artists tried their creative hands at Zentangle doodles. Many experimented with these designs last year when we worked on our horse illustrations. This year, new and returning students all came up with beautiful designs for their hearts. Using only black ink, the repetition of the line creates the pattern.

Each of our hearts were then mounted on a square that students painted with their choice of color.

Zentangles: Zen, meaning calm and peaceful, and Tangles, meaning doodles. Artists who practice this technique say that the act of drawing this way is a wonderful way to calm down the pressures of everyday responsibilities.

In my class, students are given the chance to explore different materials and fun new techniques as they develop their signature style. Some young artists love to draw with a pencil, some like to paint on canvas or create images in a digital format, while others prefer working with clay and molding three-dimensional forms. In my classroom, we use a variety of materials allowing all artists to experiment and figure out which type of art they like the best. At Ranney School, we place a strong emphasis on originality and celebrate artistic differences, always nurturing and encouraging the imagination of every student.

FOURTH GRADE Hearts

We HEART art! This is our collaborative art project that all artists in the Lower School are taking part in. Our squares and heart designs will come together as a large mural later this fall. From the sweetest Beginner designs to the amazing and intricate patterns of a 5th grade artist, Ranney School has heart!

Abstract Heart by Ava-Joyce
4th Grader artists at Ranney School continue to experiment with abstract design. These hearts show off their ability to work with color, line and shape to create a pure abstract composition that is pleasing to the eye, yet interesting enough to hold our interest.

Many of the designs involved using a ruler and dividing the heart into different angles. How they treated those sections and lines with color shows off the difference in each student's approach to designing. No two are alike, yet all are wonderful.

The painted backgrounds act as a frame for the abstract design, allowing the colors stand out and the hearts to shine.

THIRD GRADE Hearts

We HEART art! This is our collaborative art project that all artists in the Lower School are taking part in. Our squares and heart designs will come together as a large mural later this fall. From the sweetest Beginner designs to the amazing and intricate patterns of a 5th grade artist, Ranney School has heart!

Heart Mosaic by Mara
Heart Mosaic by Julie
Third grade artists will be focusing on design this year in art. Using small colored tiles, they experimented with abstract designs in their hearts. Each student was given a plate of colored tiles and a glue stick. They were told simply to fill their hearts with color.

Heart Mosaic by Zuri
Heart Mosaic by Alexander
Julie and Zuri chose to create a random pattern with the tiles filling straight rows of the heart. The colors create a jewel-like design and almost sparkle in their appearance. Mara and Alexander arranged their colors carefully into a controlled abstract design, and both are beautiful. To work with such small tiles took so much patience and time!

SECOND GRADE Hearts

We HEART art! This is our collaborative art project that all artists in the Lower School are taking part in. Our squares and heart designs will come together as a large mural later this fall. From the sweetest Beginner designs to the amazing and intricate patterns of a 5th grade artist, Ranney School has heart!

Heart Drawing by Alexa
Heart Drawing by Crystal
Heart Drawing by Lyla
Heart Drawing by Jonathan
Second Grade artists captured a scene for their heart designs. Using pencil to first draw their picture, they colored their hearts completely, giving equal importance to the subject and the background.

These hearts look like windows that open onto a scene. Alexa's heart shows us part of a still life with a beautiful vase. We can just imagine the lovely bouquet of flowers hidden from our view! Crystal and Lyla's heart shaped frames focuses on yet another window with a tiny, perfect landscape. And Jonathan's window reveals a rainbow. Wouldn't we all love to see that outside our windows?

FIRST GRADE Hearts

We HEART art! This is our collaborative art project that all artists in the Lower School are taking part in. Our squares and heart designs will come together as a large mural later this fall. From the sweetest Beginner designs to the amazing and intricate patterns of a 5th grade artist, Ranney School has heart!

Heart Design by Sadie
Heart Design by Elijah
Heart Design by Camilla
First Grade artists focused on patterns for their hearts. A pattern is anything that repeats. It could be lines as we see in the colorful stripes of Sadie's beautiful heart. It could be shapes as Elijah did with his rows of intricate triangles. His alternating color sequence creates a very striking pattern.
Heart Design by William

Camilla's turquoise and purple stars form a hidden pattern under a wonderful abstract line design that connects all the stars. William shows us that a pattern can be made up of anything. His number sequence creates a perfect pattern!

Kindergarten artists are learning that art can tell a story. Their images begin to have a visual impact and their natural love for color and design comes through in all of their drawings.

Kindergarten hearts are centered around the first letter of their names. Who they are and what they create are one and the same. In these hearts, color and design come together as beautiful expressions of each personality.

Painting skills are developing well at this age, Along with better control of a crayon and pencil, Kindergarten artists can make fast work of filling a board with paint!

Pre-Kindergartners entered the art room as confident and excited young artists. They were asked to create a heart using their favorite colors. For most of our artists, that meant every color of the rainbow and perhaps every shade in our buckets of 64 Crayola crayons!
Heart Design by Kaitlyn
A willingness to stretch the rules of the game is something we should all learn from our 4 year old artists. Creativity should know no boundaries!

After drawing the hearts, Pre-K artists had fun painting their squares with their choice of paint. We learned how to hold our paintbrushes and how to cover the squares completely with these beautiful colors.

Our introduction to art for Beginners is all about getting comfortable with the materials, the art room and each other. Our hearts are filled with strokes of color as little hands dived into the buckets of brand new September crayons.

We also discovered how to put on art room smocks and everyone got a chance to pick their favorite color of paint. Even our youngest artists painted their squares for our collaborative art project!
